When black mixed up the moves for the Caro-Kann defence, white took advantage and created a new attack by sacrificing a knight. That's one reason why one should rely on citations - for the critical thinking mind there's no place for those. On the seventh move of the crucial deciding game, black made what some now consider to have been a critical error. Tests and proof only can answer these questions.

part merely marginally evolved, but instead speed optimized code has enormously been optimized. algorithms really THAT better, or is has the A.I. But they have indeed evolved, whilst the Mephisto algorithms stood still for over 25 years. Komodo, Fritz 14, Stockfish, they all still may win. Assuming each ply adds a factor of 4 of nodes to every additional ply.

If the Mephisto Academy only was optimized for my current PC then it could think at about 5 ply deeper.

Now how would the algorithm of this oldie but goodie perform on a 3.9 Ghz, 64 bit, 4 cores, 6 threads (that's how I tested per advice from Komodo help file as I didn't turn off hyper-threading entirely). And it's also a single core with support for only 1 thread and it's an 8 bit machine. However, the machine Komodo is running on is 3.9 Ghz. Now 9.59 minutes of average fixed thinking time on this machine still can't beat 1 second average thinking time against Komodo 10.4 64 bit. Online it claims about 1945 but according me, I've tested it against humans for about 25 games, it's ceiling is somewhere around 1800. Here's an interesting experiment: my good old Mephisto Academy has an ELO rating of 1800. For such claims, no matter how attractive or believable, citations (which includes proof) is need. The claim, more or less, was that the quality of the algorithms has been improved to such extent that even on light machines (magnitudes weaker) would outperform the better Deep Blue performance (on its original machine and algorithms combined). Especially Stockfish is known for searching deep and fast :-P Because of pruning and other heuristics, vast calculations are no longer needed. And it was running on a supercomputer optimised for chess calculations. In fact, Kasparov could have won the second match, too, if he didn't try to play anti-computer chess and if he wasn't tilted. Sadly, the Deep Blue code is proprietary but it played around the level of Kasparov in the two matches in classical time controls. Magnus Carlsen went 9.5/10 in a recent Titled Tuesday (blitz controls) but his accuracy wasn't even close to an engine's. And yes, I know the human also plays at the same time control but I am talking about playing accuracy, not winning.

So they can have 1 minute to play the whole game and still play at superhuman strength and the cheaters are exposed. Engines play way more accurately on bullet time controls than the top human players in classical time controls. The Komodo engine has played many games with all kinds of handicaps, I remember watching a match last year where Komodo had a 1/30 time control disadvantage and was running single-threaded on an old laptop.Īlso, when people use Stockfish to cheat online on bullet, in other words when they pit their engine against another human player (sometimes some of the best players in the world like in Titled Turesdays) then the level of play of the engine is very high. There are many games of GMs versus modern chess engines if you look for them. Please continue to give us your feedback and suggestions on how we can help make /r/chess better for everyone.
